I was walking down a beautiful cobblestone street in Florence, Italy, snacking on my first gelato of the day. The people here were so relaxed. Even with so many tourists, you could easily pick out the locals. Why? Because they walked everywhere. They ate long meals with pastries, breads, wine and tons of pasta, but also ate fresh fruits and veggies, drank water and spent a ton time outside. And the biggest way to pick out a local from the sea of tourists: they were dressed nicely and were always put together.
Not like me in my at-home uniform of athleisure wear. Or even me in my work environment.
I asked a woman next to me for directions. I hesitated, and then also asked her why she walked so much. She told me that her family only owns one car, and they only use it for trips. They’ve always walked everywhere, even as children. They ate whatever was fresh from the market and spent time eating and socializing. She never went to the gym, but she definitely looked like she did.
I realized that Italians lived a lifestyle of movement, of fresh food, and of less stress (it wasn’t just about walking). Their lifestyle was completely different from my own. I, and many others like me, sit at desks all day, don’t get enough sleep, and live on stress and caffeine. And we wonder why obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are epidemics in North America.
Lifestyle medicine studies show us that the way you live has more to do with your health than how much or hard you work out, or the latest diet trend you ’ve tried. It’s about a healthy, whole food, plant-based diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, alcohol moderation and tobacco cessation to prevent, treat, and often times reverse lifestyle-related chronic illnesses.
80% of all healthcare spending in America is related to poor lifestyle choices. And that’s great news! Why? Because that means that diseases and conditions—such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity—are preventable health conditions.
